Purchasing any gift item for your child is a mind-numbing task. You can never be sure whether they will like what you buy for them or not. One of the most important things for children is that the digital camera should be one of the latest available in the market. If it has been heavily advertised and people are talking about it, then it is even better. This gives children a sense of pride and also allows them to ’show-off’ their possession to their friends.

It is also necessary to remember that even though you might gift your child a digital camera to click photographs for school projects, they will be using it to take pictures of their friends. So, look for some ‘fun’ features in the digital camera. These can include colorful background images or sound effects, photographic effects that they can use to enhance the images taken by them.

One more thing is ease of use. It is important that the camera has a simple system through which children can easily take pictures quickly. However, you really do not need to worry about this aspect a lot because today’s children have been born in the digital era. They are able to pick up things much faster than you or me, so as long as the camera is good in all other aspects, even if its ‘click ability’ is a little confusing, it does not really matter. They are fast learners these days!

Last but not the least, is the price. While buying a digital camera for your child, it is understandable that you really do not want to spend a lot of money. There are lots of choices available in the market today. The price range starts from as low as $30 and can go up to $300. So, it really depends on how much you would like to spend on the camera. Do you take a lot of pictures? I have come to realize the advantages of taking photos recently. The pictures we take of our lives and the moments our children have growing up are our sole link to reminiscing. They are literal snapshots of time and can never be replaced.

We do have our memories of course, but they can and do fade away over time. The mind can also forget certain details that a photo never relinquishes. Thank God for the photograph. The digital camera has turned out to be an innovation that has really made picture taking an incredible experience. We can now take virtually an unlimited amount of pictures without ever having to worry about wasted film and reloading. It all centers around the computer. We simply plug in our digital cameras, upload the photos and we’re done. Have you had any experience using this technology? Any digital camera has an array of functions and uses that enable the handler to take excellent pictures. However, many of the functions are not fully understood and the pictures are not of the best possible quality. Understanding these features enable the user to have complete control over their machine, and therefore get the best possible images.

Firstly the quality of the image that can be produced relies upon the resolution of the digital camera. This is made up of mega pixels. The number of mega pixels determines the level of detail in the picture. The pixels are the tiny dots of colour that make up image. These look fine on the computer or screen. However, once transferred to the computer and enlarged, images containing a lower number of pixels show these dots and so the image is flawed. Therefore, for good quality images the best digital camera to choose is one that has a high number of mega pixels.

The quality of the digital camera lens will also affect your picture quality. The lens should have a zoom feature, which enables you to zoom both in and out to create the perfect composition for your image. Each device will differ, but the concept is the same. The lens should be labeled with two zoom numbers; the smallest states the shortest possible zoom distance and the biggest number shows the longest possible distance. Consider the type of photographs that you are going to take when choosing your digital camera. If the pictures will mainly be indoors, then a lower number is required to be able to zoom out in enclosed areas.

The average digital camera will have an inbuilt auto focus function which will serve most amateur photographer`s needs. However, for more effects or for advanced photography, select a camera that has a manual focus option also. The auto focus can be turned off in some devices, which is an exceptional feature as the photographer can choose which option is best for the photograph being taken.

Another consideration is the shutter delay on the digital camera. The shutter delay affects the quality of focus and composition. The delay means that the picture is actually taken some time after the button is pressed on the camera. This means that the subject of the composition may have moved, clouds may shadow the expected lighting effects, or that your hand may shake and so the image is distorted and blurred. A good way to combat this is to only half press the button when you are composing the picture. This activates the auto focus and prepares the device for the shot. When the button is pressed, the photograph will be taken much more quickly, and will help combat any distortions.

Memory space is important if you want to take good photographs with your digital camera. Not only does this enable lots of storage, it also gives you the opportunity to take several photographs, in search of that one perfect shot.

Any digital camera will have inbuilt storage but this is minimal, averaging around 16 megabytes in total. The memory space can be added to with the use of a memory card or stick. The type chosen will depend upon what is compatible with your camera. Any memory card or stick is good, and they go up to 2GB in size. It is important that the type chosen is compatible with your home computer so that the images can be transferred and stored, giving you access to more photographic opportunities.

DSLR cameras are like investments. If you use it carefully and also if you regularly maintain it, these cameras could last a very long time. Thats why, when you buy your initial digital SLR, a great idea is to search and to ask some more experienced photographers for which SLRs would give you a clear bang (or a click for this matter) for your dollar. But, for those of you who dont have a professional photographer to which you can turn to, here comes the top two SLR cameras that are available on the market. So grab them while they are hot!

1. The Nikon D40X. This camera is just like second version for the original D40 of 6 mega pixels, but this one has a higher 10.2 MP CCD sensor. But of course this comes at a price, so the D40X will ask you for some more bucks which you could spend on lenses or other accessories, however, thats the payoff you need to accept for more mega pixels. The D40X has the exactly same 420 pixel sensor with 3D color Matrix Metering II that the D80 has, and also has the same processor like D200. If you decide to buy D40X, you have actually four options here: a. Buy only SLR digital camera.
b. Buy SLR camera and 18 mm – 55 mm lens c. Buy SLR camera with two lenses 18 mm – 55 mm and 55 mm – 200 mm d. Buy SLR digital camera and 18 mm – 135 mm lens. This one dont have "auto focus" feature, so in case you want this feature, the lenses could help you quite a good deal. Compared with other SLRs, this one is smaller, but the cost of producing a lightweight camera is that theres just one display for image playback and menu altogether. This could be ok for beginners, however, most professionals or even amateur photographers might want to have secondary display for status. This item is very good for impatient persons because it takes less than a half from a second to start up.

2. Pentax K10D In case you dont have such a considerable budget to spend for your SLR, you can be happy to find out that Pentax K10D is budget friendly. Its price sure is not the lowest in the SLR range, but the camera has the greatest set of features for this price. The camera has nice looking switches and buttons, also a 10mega pixel CCD which comes with an integrated lens shift, and it also has shake reduction technology that is state of the art, the body is water and weather resistant, 11 point auto focus and complete set for exposure modes. Noise reduction is good at ISO 800 and also can go to ISO 1600. But, this camera best fits those who already are a bit initiated into using SLRs, because there is no auto setup to help the novice, and thus a person that want such kind of camera needs to be a bit more initiated.

Now they have models that are as small as a chapstick.

Since digital cameras are one of the most popular portable devices on the market, a lot of people are looking for the smallest digital camera they can find. If you find yourself scouring the internet and your local electronics stores with that goal, just keep in mind that one way to reduce the size of a digital camera is to include fewer features. Don’t sacrifice important features just for a smaller size.

After all, what good is a small digital camera if it only has enough memory to store a few shots, or if it is a low-resolution camera that produces grainy photos?

You need to find the right balance. Find the right trade-off between small size and the important features. Let’s compare some of the smallest models to illustrate what I mean.

- The Blink by StyleCam is, technically speaking, the smallest digital camera available today, but it only has a resolution of 0.3 megapixel. It’s not built for serious photography. It also doesn’t have any zoom function to speak of, but at a price of less than $40, it could be considered a good value digital camera.

- Sony’s CyberShot DSC-U20 can also compete for the title of the smallest digital camera, but it’s loaded with features to boot! It comes with a 2.0 megapixel resolution and expandable memory storage using Sony’s memory stick technology.

- Casio’s Exilim EX-M2 is probably the best investment when it comes to compact digital cameras. It also comes with a 2.0 megapixel resolution, but it can also play mp3 files and record voice conversations. The only thing going against the Casio Exilim EX-M2 is a price tag of almost $400.

Just because we’re looking at the smallest digital cameras doesn’t mean that they will also be the cheapest models. It can be expensive to shrink the best features into a tinier package. It also doesn’t mean that we should settle for fewer features. Our investment can go a long, long way as long as we exercise a little caution and do a fair amount of research before making our choice of digital camera.
